Wolves, Akitas & Huskies

Akitas are related to wovles. Just like Huskies and Malamutes. But Akitas DNA is the closest to wovles. But Akitas don't howl, Huskies and Malamutes have been known to do that. A Malamute howl is identical to a wolf, you can't tell them apart. (I read this on the internet). All three of these big breeds don't do well around smaller animals. That's why you cannot have them off leash. All these breeds can work hard and like to have a job. Akitas and Malamutes can get over 100 lbs. Huskies tend to be smaller and quicker, but still pretty big dogs. My Aunt got to meet some Alaskan Huskies that were racing in the Iditarod. (see picture). Alot of the old sled dogs become household pets. But they need a lot of exercise.

Akitas are nice to people, but not all Akitas are nice to people. Sometimes they don't like strangers. And they can destroy smaller animals. I have seen huskies and got to meet one it is cool and fun but I like akitas the best of all the
dogs. It's just neat that there are some similairities.

Akitas can't be left off leash ever, ever? Gee does that mean I have to quit taking mine for walks at the lake? My prior Akita went for walks there with for years. My current Akita goes to training and play groups each and every week with dogs from 10-100lbs. She's met well over 200 dogs this year with few issues. Call me crazy, but I think if trained, socialized and of solid temperament an Akita can be off lead and with other dogs. Check my blog out of Jade and her adventures.

Wow, this blog is very incorrect about Akitas. I came across your blog while searching google for why Akitas howl. My pure bread is currently howling on my deck.
He loves to run with the small dogs at the dog park, and last night he went crazy because he wanted to play with my neighbor's boston terrier.
My other neighbor has a malamute... who also loves smaller animals.
Bam.

i have two Akita's who were raised around one cat until she died from a car 2 years ago. Now we have two small kittens. The male kitten sleeps curled up with my big alpha-male akita. And, from what I've learned, after having my older Akita for the last 9 years, even the more aggresive ones are usually nice to almost anyone or anything as long as they don't feel threatened or feel like their kin are threatened. My Akita's have never growled unless growled at first or unless someone was making them feel like they needed to protect me or my kids, and that's if someone is right up in my face yelling or making threating movements towards me or them.
